Everyone knows that I am so not a fan of the cold weather or at least they learned quickly!
Here I have complied a lot of "love letters" as one parishioner referred to the weekly mailings that I send out. September through to December are contained here so it is a very long post by my standards.
A Dogs life in a parish
Once the Monkey Mail got going well and I learned how to
jazz it up with pictures to make it eve more appealing, Aslan, who is an office
dog, began to make occasional appearances that morphed into weekly appearances
and even the occasional call to see if he was in and could be visited – at a
safe distance from me but Aslan was not required to abide by the same
rules. So, he “suffered” through all
that was asked of him for each mailing that he was included in. Aslan’s appearances brought joy to many and
his antics brought lots of laughter. With
the advent of Covid in 2020 Aslan was about 10 months old. There were lots of puppy play and goofiness
but he really is an old soul and very patient with all of us
This post also marks the end of the pieces that were written in 2020 so a new year will begin and the Monkey mail will continue as we navigate through the next steps in the parish and dealing with our alternate reality.
September 3, 2020
Hello everyone
When I said the Ber months had started it must have been a typing mistake
because it is BRRRR! months and a bit shocking to the system unless you wear a
perpetual fur coat!
What do you need to know? Well, we will be outside for worship on Sunday
and given the change in the temperature not a moment too soon to be
finishing. The frog weather says 20 degrees and cloudy, I'd suggest a
warm sweater, coat or blanket if you find it as cold as I do!
Pre-registration, have you done it? If not and you plan to be here the Incumbents warden has graciously agreed to do it for Sunday September 6. Please do
so soon if you plan to attend, usual restrictions apply -- 6 feet distance,
BYOC (Bring your own chair) masks are recommended but not mandatory for
outside. The service will, as usual, be on the blog and I think we are live
streaming!! One more detail I almost forgot!! I will find a willing
"volunteer" to help, never fear!
On September 9 we will have a celebration of life. The
service will be live streamed for you to attend. ONLY FAMILY MEMBERS will
be in the church -- well besides myself, Rachel on piano and Doug our trusty
technician for the camera to bring the service to you.
Registration for September 13 will be done through the office beginning on
Tuesday September 8 when the new office administrator begins. You will
need to have registered your intent to attend the service on Sunday September
13 no later than noon on Friday. Only 50 people are allowed in the
building. Our service on the 13th will be a wonderful celebration with baptism.
The service will not be live streamed but it will be recorded and made
available as soon as possible after we conclude worship. If you are
wondering why, we need to zoom a baptismal sponsor into the service to participate and it
will strain the system too much to run zoom and to live feed, but never fear
you will be able to see the happy occasion from home just a little later than
in real time!
I will send out the self check list for inside services next week. There
is enough information in this one for now. There is lots happening and we
are doing our best to make sure that we have a safe environment for those who
choose to attend services.
In the mean time, stay well, stay safe and break out the warmer clothing
September 10
Hello everyone
It's a beautiful Thursday afternoon but I am already started with my
layering. I've seen a few raised eyebrows but hey I'm cold. Someone
said, "my goodness then what are you doing in Winnipeg?"
As you are aware we held the celebration of life. If you were able to
connect via the live stream wonderful, if not you can still watch the recorded
version (the link was inserted here)
Now for details for this coming Sunday. We are welcoming a new member to the
St. Paul's family. If you are planning to attend and have not
already registered the deadline is noon tomorrow. The office
administrator will be in the office to receive your calls the office number is
204 475 7549 or you can email the parish office. As of now there are 35
registered (50 is the limit). As well please brush up on the expectations
in the protocol. A self check list is attached to this mailing. The link
is at the beginning and hopefully it works. Please print as you are able, fill
it in the morning of the service and bring it with you. No Printer? No
Problem! We have made copies and you will be asked to complete it in the hall
entrance before proceeding to the greeters table in the Narthex to be assigned
your seat. I can't tell you how excited I am....people will have to sit
in the front pews! Oh and I'm excited to see you too of course.
For those not yet ready to return do not fret. We have you covered as
well. However, we have a slight delay to
deal with. Yes, the service will be at 10 am but the recorded version
will not be available until later in the day (hopefully).
We can not live stream and have a god parent present via zoom because we do not
have enough broadband (I'm sure it's Dutch to some) suffice it to say the wi-fi
is not strong enough to carry it. Yes, before you ask, we are attempting
to rectify the issue but it won't be in time for Sunday!
So as soon as the recorded version is uploaded by zoom then we will send you
the link via the monkey mail. It may more likely be an evening event for
you so instead of coffee maybe a toddy of some sort or a lovely glass of wine
to help the service go down more smoothly.
No you all can not join via zoom, again the strength of the broadband is such
that we will crash the system here. So, your patience is appreciated, we
are all on a steep learning curve.
Have an enjoyable weekend, and stay safe
September 14
Good morning
For those still patiently waiting, the wait is over. Doug had the
video of yesterdays glorious celebration ready to send last night about 7
pm. I was at a benefit concert and arrived home later than usual and did
not send it out to you. So here is the link
Our Bishop joined us via “Zoom”, participating as a Godparent.
Doug writes: Please note that the audio and video quality are poor due to
the internet speed currently available at St. Paul’s, not your home equipment.
There are plans to upgrade our internet service this week so that future
streams will be much improved.
As well you are reminded that you need to register for the Sunday worship services.
Our maiden voyage saw 41 people in attendance of the 44 that registered so we
nearly maxed out. It is vitally important for you to be considerate of
others who want to attend and register ONLY if you are going to attend.
We understand the occasional last-minute cancellation because a person is
questioning a symptom or not feeling up to par (Please call in the cancellation
or send an email to my personal address or contact one of the wardens)
It was so good to see so may of you, and the shaking up of the seating plan
moved a few Anglicans about! so, sing away today your put your right leg in,
take your right leg out ....and shake it all about! You know play with
the words a bit. Now that I've planted that song worm in your head
Have an enjoyable, beautiful day!
September 17
Hello everyone
It's a gloves and hat kind of morning if you are out walking. I also had
on 4 layers because I refuse to break out the winter coat.
September 30 is quickly coming so dig out your orange shirts to honour the
survivors of the Residential Schools, to remember those who died while there
and raise your voice That all Children Matter. September 27 is the Sunday
closest so let’s see a wave of Orange from those in attendance and of course at
home!
There were a few announcements that needed to be
included this week
Now on to Sunday Service!!
It is with thanks to Doug that we are going to be live streaming via YouTube so
people not on Facebook can find the service with a bit more ease. The
link for the live feed is also recorded (so if 10 is too early) you can always
watch it later in the day from the comfort of home! The link is
https://youtu.be/NtBeKHYxRP8
If you are planning to attend you have limited time left to register!!!
Registration closes Friday at noon. As of now there are approximately 20
registered so there is room BUT only if you call!! Don't forget to do
your self-check before coming and if you have printed it off fill it in and
bring it with you (signed and dated of course so we know who it belongs to!)
Announcements in Church can be done but at the moment I am the only one
delivering them. So if you have an announcement for church please call it
into the office or email it and I promise it will be read out, sent out, shared
by all means available!
In the meantime, have a lovely day. Stay safe and if I don't see you in
the pew. I'll see you on the big screen (or the computer...whatever works!)
September 24
Hello everyone
I feel like an old gossip!! Never the less I have information for
you.
I have been reminded that those at home following the service still need the
words so I am trying to remember to add the service to the blog, and then
remembering to publish it either Saturday evening or Sunday morning. So
never fear, the blog will be ready for your, at home convenience and in case
you have lost the address it is kjlaldin.blogspot.com
We will live stream via YouTube again this week and the link
is https://youtu.be/2PKHp22zWAY. You can also view the link
later as the service will be recorded.
In trying to collect the keys to the building from the renters we discovered
there were an extraordinary number of keys on the loose in this city.
Some groups had as many as eight sets and still weren't sure that they had
collected them all to return. A bit of a nightmare! So, the outside
locks have all been replaced. If you are a proud key holder, I have to
tell you some bad news...the key won't work anymore. In an effort to control
traffic through the building keys will currently only be issued to those who
absolutely need access. If you have had a key in the past and really need
to get a new one then we do ask that you contact one of the wardens or the property
chair who has been tasked with this great key challenge. And you might
win the draw of holding a key to the kingdom!
A new Progress is being planned and our editor is looking for reports and
articles. So put your thinking caps on and dust off your pencils,
deadline for submissions is September 25.
I've been reminded to include the Self Screening check list that we collect
each Sunday. Well after an hour of trying to get this monkey mail to
insert the link it absolutely refused. I even tried uploading the thing
again all to no avail. Thanks to RC, she figured out how it could be
attached and the link is below. Remember to do the check list on
the morning of the service, write your name on it and date it as well. If
you forget to bring it with you or can not print it off, no problem we will
have lots available at the entrance for you.
If there is a particular service that you would like us to offer for you,
please let me know and we will do our best to put it together for you to enjoy
Stay safe, stay well and don't forget if you are attending the in person
service you need to register at the office by noon on Friday, numbers so far
are low so if you are concerned about giving others an opportunity because you
have been here in the last few weeks, not to worry I won't mind asking you to
let someone else have a chance if we reach the magic number of 50 and have a
waiting list!
Have an enjoyable day!
Let's finish with a little Newfoundland colour. This is part of the
beautiful Humber Valley and was my daily drive for four years.
September 28 Code Orange Update
Hello everyone
I know a number of you have been wondering what the new directive from the
diocese would be since Winnipeg and surrounding area have been upgraded to code
Orange.
The Bishop's directive highlights:
Presently, our protocols for worship are acceptable and
affirmed by government standards:
1. Attendance is permitted at 30% of worship space capacity, provided that
physical distance between participants is no less than 2 metres,
2. A maximum of 10 participants for non-worship gatherings, meetings, weddings
and funerals.
3. Baptisms and anointing/laying on of hands will remain in suspension at least
until code Orange has been lifted.
4. Masks are mandatory for all participants while attending all Church related
events.
5.Celebrations of the Eucharist may continue with renewed vigilance for risk
reduction. I understand that the removal of a mask to share communion may in
fact increase the risk of spreading disease. I also understand that parish
communities across the diocese have put much research, thought, and effort into
their reopening plans, and I encourage our leaders to share their best
practices with one another, and their new methods of sharing communion,
6. There remains no congregational singing. However, a soloist, appropriately
distanced from others, is still acceptable. Musical ensembles are
permitted, provided they are appropriately socially distanced and they
don't include instruments dependent on human breath.
7. Each community discerns for itself whether or not to facilitate corporate
worship, including the number of participants, and the administering of
the Eucharist.
So the good news is that we can still have our worship
services as per the present protocol with some minor tweaking that the
leadership will visit through the coming week and be ready for on Sunday.
I would remind you that registering is very important, you may do so by calling
or emailing the office and a few of you have sent the message to me when you
miss the Friday deadline (Yes, I always now the numbers the office admin sends
them to me before she leaves the office) and while that practice is not
encouraged we still let you in as long as we have not maxed out our numbers!
Stay safe and as the church sign says Trust God BUT wear a mask
October 1, This is brought to you by the letters SPFG
Hello everyone
Well, the months are zipping along. We said good by to September and
Hello to Thanksgiving! And before we know it November and
Christmas.
We had great plans for this Sunday and services to bless pets and all the fun
and joy that comes along with that, but alas Bars can have 100 people in them
but we can only have 10 people safely socially distanced outside. Given
our attendance would have been slightly higher (but not nearly close to 100) we
had to cancel.
Given the concerns that have arisen and the increased anxiety of many of our
members the wardens and I had a brief consultation and decided that for the
time being we will host Eucharist every two weeks. The service for Sunday was
done, but on Monday I recreated the whole thing and we will now have the
service of the word (or a close similarity). I have included some fun
bits for St. Francis of Assisi as it is St. Francis of Assisi Day. And if
you are going to be in church, please bring a picture of your beloved pet for
the blessing time, if you are staying in the comfort of home then you can
include your pet in the service. We will have a blessing of the
critters! Yes we will livestream on YouTube, I'm working on the
assumption (this could get me in big trouble) that it will be the same link as
before.
And the printed version will be up on the blog so you have the words to follow
along and if you feel like sleeping in the service
records so it is available at your convenience! Imagine, you could pause
me or even better fast forward the sermon! The possibilities are
limitless, I feel like you could change the speed like we did on the old LP
players to speed up or slow down the music, I should definitely not be planting
ideas.
Those who registered early, bless you. It made it so much
easier to select my victims (oops) I mean my volunteers for the readings!
Thank you in advance and I know some of you haven't checked that email yet
today and confirmed but you're in the service now so its a bit hard to say no.
Ha! and I take Friday off so no changes. But thank you for participating
Next week there is a communion scheduled as we celebrate Thanksgiving.
Despite Covid we have much to be thankful for and celebrate we will! I
encourage you all to remember those less fortunate and supply a tin for the
bin, a donation or whatever works best for you. I do know that our food
banks depend on us to help keep the shelves stocked so from our abundance of
blessings let's fill the bins...should I leave out 2 or 3???? More you say,
well if you insist!!!
Registration, have you done it yet? Tomorrow is the deadline. So be
sure to call the office before noon to get on that list. Yes I know, late
additions send me a note and I add them but if at all possible lets keep that
limited. SO NOON TOMORROW. And don't forget Masks are mandatory, Do
your Covid self check list the morning of, bring it with you or snag one at the
door we keep a supply on hand.
And a big thank you to the four volunteers that came in this week
to sanitize for Sunday. The Wardens are endeavouring to have a cleaning
service contracted soon
I have yet to finish taking holidays and have four weeks of them left, along
with some education time. Education time I'll snag here and there but I
have set nearly two weeks in October, directly following the synod on the 17th
and two weeks in November (I think I blocked the 15th) But I will confirm that
as it gets closer.
I think that is all of my newsy bits for this week. Hope you are all
staying well and most definitely keep safe. If you need me, I am but a
telephone call away, I even know how to do google duo so we can see each other
if you prefer that. And I do occasionally do a face to face socially
distanced coffee for those who are comfortable with it.
Have a wonderful Weekend, enjoy the fall colours and crunch
October 1, The thing about assumptions
Hello everyone
A Bishop once took the time to explain to me what assume really meant, I can
tell you I was less than impressed with that bishop (for many reasons this was
just one more in my long list) but his inappropriate explanation still lingers.
(I bet you are wondering) I did tell you as I included the YouTube link
in the email of just a short time ago that assumptions can go wrong and sure
enough I hit send and ten minutes later DC called to say there is a new link
every week soooooo here is this weeks link that will allow you to join us for
the service on October 4, and the blog address remains the same
If you misplace it you can also find it via the website and the Facebook page
Now stay safe!
October 8, Thanksgiving
Hello everyone
Well, if you didn't figure it out, I made a "boo boo" last
week. I had the blog all done and ready to publish and I Forgot to
hit the publish button, until Monday morning when I realized what had happened.
It won't happen this week!!! I have already hit the publish button so it
is on there and ready for you whenever you are ready for it.
kjlaldin.blogspot.com
We have had a few technical issues which are constantly being worked on to get
the kinks out. So, while we understand that you are used to us being
nearly perfect, as you can see our imperfections have been shining through
while we figure this all out. Never fear we will get there --at least
that is the hope!
For those attending the service in person please remember an item for the Food
Bank Bin. The need has likely grown for many. Bins will be in the
Narthex area for drop off.
If you have not registered for service yet, there is lots of room. As of this
morning there are but 15 registered. Noon tomorrow is
the deadline
It has been a busy week but a slow news week here on the home front!
Services for the 18th and 25th are in place with two of our retired clergy graciously
agreeing to lead services. ML will be returning to the big screen and BO
will be making his debut. Meanwhile I will be on holiday, directly
following the Synod on the 17th and returning October 30, just in time for All
Saints Day.
The new Up To Date was sent out today so most bits are in there that you need
making it a short message from me this week
Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving Weekend, I know that it will likely be more
subdued than usual however God's goodness continues to flow into our lives and
for that we give thanks
Stay well and Stay Safe
Hello everyone
Well at 630 am it was cold walking; Aslan didn't seem to mind but the person on
the other end of the leash keeps trying to rush his morning meandering.
He was not to be rushed and rebelled a little -- that did not last long!
Shortly after I looked out the window, blinked then looked again, just in case
I was hallucinating but no there was white stuff and it was landing and it
looked for a short period like it was going to stick, fortunately it did
not. I am not ready for winter!
What's new this week you ask, well the provincial numbers are a disaster, I
feel like "smacking someone up the side of the head" to knock some
sense in them! My DH assures me that it won't fix it. Someone this
morning said "well, you can’t fix stupid" but I'd be willing to lock
them up and give it a go! Volunteers anyone??
Tomorrow I am on holiday for nearly two weeks. The honorary assistants have graciously
agreed to cover pastoral concerns in my absence. These will not be in
person visits but telephone talks. I will be back on the 30th to finalize any
details for November 1 (All Saints Day). If you have a loved one that you
would like to have remembered during that service please let the office know
and we will compile a list. Even if you are not attending in person, you
are welcome to call in the name of your loved one. Have a candle ready (battery
operated or match lit) and when we do the memorial piece you can turn on/light
up your candle. For those attending in person I would ask that you bring
a battery-operated candle with you. We will endeavour to have some
available should you forget.
Oh yes, the link for Sunday, I nearly forgot! Here it is
https://youtu.be/5cV3DIkRgVc
The words are on the blog and yes, the blog has already been published!
With Halloween just around the corner and the day care where
Aslan sometimes goes throwing a pooches Halloween pawty we are working on his
costume! This is our first attempt,
but I think he'd rock the clergy shirt and collar
better! I'll get on that one later tonight.
Have a wonderful weekend, I hope that I have given you a
little smile today despite the difficult times that we are currently in, we
look to better days in the near future. Apparently, bars are closed for
the next two weeks -- so much for my bar hopping holiday ;)
Have a fabulous weekend
October 29, Service Information
Hello everyone
Yes, I am back in the office early, to be honest with the exception of merely
not taking two services and preparing sermons I may as well have worked with
the amount of email traffic that shot into my inbox every day. (I know
why I resisted a smart phone for so long) and NO shutting off my phone is not
an option with an aged mother who has dementia issues and siblings who refuse
to make decisions. That indecisiveness ended yesterday and I no longer
consulted I dictated (my siblings tell me I am good at that) what they would be
doing next and early this morning they had hopped to it and by 7:15 am I had an
update!
Otherwise yes, I did get lots of craft items that were works in progress
finished and managed to get two parcels in the mail. But why oh why did I
think I could embroider a table cloth in time for Christmas, I have about three
weeks to get that finished and in the mail. It gets worst, I actually
thought I'd get at least two finished which means there is another one sitting
there waiting. Well, I tell myself that I didn't actually say it would be
this Christmas!
I watched the services from home these last two Sunday's. Sitting on the
couch with a big mug of freshly roasted, freshly brewed coffee -- yes, I can
definitely see the appeal. But I had a problem, when that camera slewed
around to focus on the reader I was left guessing who this person or that
person was under the mask. It was like show and tell. I could tell
who some were but others I could not recognize -- it was like being teased for
the whole time
DC has been playing with YouTube and St. Paul now has its own channel!!!
Talk about getting put in the movies, perhaps we will become a YouTube
sensation! So, tell all your friends, get them to subscribe and let’s see
if we can hit a million (likes that is but dollars would be great too!)
Here is the information from DC:
St.Paul’s now officially has a Youtube channel where upcoming
live streams and previously recorded services can be found.
The link to our channel is:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1PjLywZrpISPEHLiyTEiVQ
This link will not change from week to week as we have done in
the past - the channel will be kept up to date with upcoming and recorded
services.
Navigating our channel:
Home Tab for upcoming live stream
Playlist Tab for previously recording and upcoming services
About Tab for more information about St. Paul’s and links to
our Website and Facebook page.
So how about that, now your job is to publicize this information broadly so
people tune in.
The blog with the words to the service will also be published today, not
bookmarked yet well the address is kjlaldin.blogspot.com
Some of you asked and I have listened. Guided Meditation for
those who are interested will be set up via a meeting room through my Gmail.
If you are interested in being part of the guided meditation please email
me and I will send you the link on Monday! Oh yes, when will I host
it? Monday evening at 7pm. The dates will be November 2
and November 9. Then November 30, December 7 and December 14 to
begin. The goal will be to help ground you, relax you, reduce anxiety --
basically whatever you need. Guided meditation is not for everyone so I
won't be offended if you decide its not for you.
Upcoming services, what do we have planned
Then I'm finishing up the holiday time for two weeks and Rev. TS will be
leading the worship. That takes us to the end of November and there are
big plans underway for December -- but you are not getting that news today I'll
let you anticipate what might be up our sleeves!
We need a few more volunteers to help on Sundays as greeters and readers. We
have been working off of the list of people that register their intent to be
present week to week. The greeters have a slightly different or more
extensive role. Greeters do not merely welcome the people during these
days but also seat them safely distanced. If you are willing to do this occasionally,
please call the office to ask the office admin to put you on a list. Many
of the greeters that we had before the pandemic are choosing to worship from
home so we hesitate to contact people in the event that you are not yet going
out much in public or ready to be in a slightly larger gathering.
The Up to date and a few extra bits of information have been emailed to you
from the office.
Have an enjoyable day! And stay safe!
Have an enjoyable, beautiful snowy day!
October 30, It is inevitable
Hello everyone
It was definitely preventable but ultimately inevitable Manitoba, Winnipeg in
particular, has gone in a red zone!
Churches have been reduced to a 15% capacity and the bishop has asked that we
consider not meeting in person. I considered, asked the executive for
input and the decision is to cancel all in person services effective
immediately. So, there will not be an in person
service this Sunday.
However, there is a plan. I always have one of those in my back
pocket. We will live stream on Sunday morning. Present in the
church there will only be the musicians, AO who has been doing the webcam so
faithfully and myself. We will do the service that was originally planned
and that is already published on the blog.
I hope that an ounce of prevention for safety now sends the numbers down,
people recover and then we can go back to doing something in person.
For those who had registered your intent to be at the service please send me an
email letting me know that you have received this notice. I will be in
the office tomorrow morning calling everyone that I don't hear from to confirm
that you know about the change. I will also send you an update concerning
November 8 as soon as possible.
Please do your best to stay safe
November 5
Hello everyone
Last week we flew by the seat of our pants! And did a quick reversal of
meeting in person to everyone stay at home. Thank you to all who
responded via email, it meant I dropped Aslan off at 9:30 for his Howl-a-ween
Pawty (yes in costume and yes, he bobbed for apples and wieners) and then
headed into the office to make approximately 5 phone calls. We are going
to be in this for a while yet and here at St. Paul we have planned to continue
with recording and uploading to YouTube, we will revisit the decision at the
end of the month.
I know we have knitters in the congregation ... I need a volunteer to knit me a
Mary, Joseph and a Donkey. I can acquire the pattern and email it to you
so that everything is safely done. Are you wondering what's she up to
now??? I have a plan for them!
Because we are unable to get together to observe Advent as we usually would I
would like us to have them travel to as many homes as possible. Say for
example TS and his partner are the hosts the first night, then they would select someone
for Mary and Joseph to travel to the second night and so on until Christmas Eve
when that family (or individual) makes sure that Mary and Joseph arrive to the
church for the service (assuming that we can have some small in person service
(if not I'll think of a back up plan!) I will have prayers included for
people to do together and perhaps a sheet that people can write in names so
that we know where Mary and Joseph have travelled and are able to avoid
repeat visits! But first things first I need a volunteer to knit the
characters for me! I think this can be done safely distanced
The service for this week has been recorded, DC is polishing it up (editing
it) We did observe Remembrance Sunday and we tried to include as many
people as possible. So special thanks to all those who participated
The advantage of recording is more people can "volunteer" to
participate. I am sure most of those who participated this week have
raised their eyebrows on that and gotten a laugh!!
The blog is up! and the link to the service is there, however if you
click on that link today you won't get anything as the service for Sunday will
not be uploaded for viewing until Saturday evening! Anticipation is good
for you!
Just in case, here are the links
kjlaldin.blogspot.com
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1PjLywZrpISPEHLiyTEiVQ
These link addresses don't change. May I suggest that you hit the
subscribe button on the YouTube channel and then any additions should come to
your inbox, (in Gmail it usually appears in the social tab)!
At the very end of the blog there are a few music pieces for Remembrance Day
that are out there in YouTube land for your listening enjoyment.
I think that is it for today, just watch I'll hit send and poof I'll remember
something I was planning to include
Have a wonderful day and stay safe
Have an enjoyable, beautiful snowy day!
November 21, Christ the King Sunday
Good Saturday Evening
I nearly forgot to upload the blog, despite RC and TS
sending me the material. So, it is just published (kjlaldin.blogspot.com)
and I have embedded the YouTube link for the service tomorrow. Many
thanks to TS for taking the services these past two Sundays. I have been
finishing up the holiday time with only a few workdays tossed in.
Although I must confess, not being able to go anywhere has been a bit
boring! My mother asked me what I was doing to pass the time and I told
her I was walking the streets (pun intended) Sorry I have a weird sense of
humour and am easily entertained. I tell myself it helps keep me
sane. One day I’ll tell you about shopping for a funeral suit.
10,000 steps have become a bit of a slow day. I have
met a few more neighbours…well not exactly neighbours but they live in the
neighbourhood, so close enough. I’ve come home with a few of their life
stories and they have no clue what I do for a living. I could have used a
purple stole for a few!
I did manage to complete a few projects but still have a
couple of large cross stitch pieces that need stretching. I don’t like
that part of the process so I have been avoiding it! And now framing is
definitely not considered essential goods (little this government knows) so it
would appear it won’t be matted and framed anytime soon so I guess that means I
can avoid it for a bit longer, but it really needs to come off the ironing
board just in case it needs to be used for what it is intended for.
RC has been busy at the church getting services recorded and
will be sending out detailed information about her project soon so stay tuned.
PW graciously agreed to make Mary, Joseph and the
Donkey. A candle and holder as well as a travelling liturgy will all be
included with the trio. They will travel to homes throughout the parish
during the Advent Season. DM is making the travel diary and I hope those
that are visited and become hosts for Mary, Joseph and their Donkey will agree
to snap a picture and send it for posting on either our Facebook page or our
webpage. I do think that we can safely do this, despite all of the
restrictions that we currently face. I am suggesting that when you
deliver the trio to the next host, you call ahead to let them know that you are
coming. If they live in a secure building, they meet you at a safe
distance for the drop off or if you are going to someone’s house you hang the
travel bag on the door, ring the bell and then step away (sounds like something
out of the movies…step away from the door). The trio do not stay longer
than one night as they have a lot of ground to cover. The person with
them on Christmas eve should arrange for their return to the church. And
just imagine next Sunday they begin their adventure as we kick off the first
Sunday of Advent. The Book of Common prayer collect for the first
Sunday of Advent begins, “Stir up we beseech thee O Lord…” I think I
will let it kick in tomorrow and whip up a batch of cinnamon raisin
bread. Since the cleaning is done and the carpets are scrubbed the house
should now start to smell like baking.
My DH thinks I’m downstairs watching television while I am
writing to you all!! Fortunately, he’s not on the mailing list and has no
idea what I am up to. So, it goes without saying, stay safe and be well
this too shall pass
Have a wonderful day tomorrow
November 26, Advent 1
Hello Everyone
I was thinking as I uploaded the service and links to the
blog for this week and started thinking about the service for next week, that I
have to go in and keep a copy of my love letters to you all. Some day
I’ll publish them, make a million and give you your ten percent, that has
biblical basis. The nonsense that you can’t wear a mask because it’s
against your religion doesn’t. So has the church sign currently says …
Trust God BUT wear a Mask!
It has been a productive morning. My article for the
Progress has been written and sent. Thank you to the kind parishioners
who ask the recurring question for the inspiration! You will know who you
are. The packages of the travelling trio have been prepared and mailed
and I have had a visit (from a safe distance) with the Odogun family.
They send their thanks for the care and support that they have been given.
The Travelling Trio, Mary, Joseph and their Donkey made
minor adjustments made to their travel plans. After considering a
number of options it was ultimately decided to select 26 families to host Mary,
Joseph and the donkey as they travel through Advent. We did not feel we could
hand off the knitted characters safely or sanitize. Watch your mail box -- to
see if you will be one of the hosts of the trio. Yes, we resorted to snail
mail! This way we could include a few people not connected by computer.
So please, if you are in contact with such a parishioner, please give them a
heads up! If you are lucky enough to be given the opportunity to offer your hospitality,
we ask that you take pictures and submit them to the office and TC so that they
can be uploaded to the Facebook page and website. Don’t have TC’s email not
to worry you have mine and you have the office email send it to us and we will
be happy to forward it for you. This way even if you are not a host you can
watch the journey.
Also, we ask that you add a few comments about their stay
with you and we can keep a travel journal. The idea is to have a little
fun and be creative. If you have your own nativity at home then feel free
to use your characters. If you do not have a nativity set, don’t
panic! We have included a paper one for your use that you can put
together. You can colour it or leave it black and white. Those
receiving packages (yes, I know who you are — I have the master list) will find
a label on the outside telling you what day you get to open it, a letter
explaining what we would like you to do, a paper nativity, a service of welcome
to do at home and a pamphlet about Mary and Joseph. Again, have fun with
it and do send us pictures and comments.
Are you all impressed? that I even found you an option for a
nativity, well don’t be too impressed with me. In 2014 (this is not a
typo) ML and I (we go way back) were having lunch and she told me about this
lovely nativity that you could print off and people could use at home without
going through considerable expense (three pieces of paper, ink and
scissors). I asked her to send it, she did and all I had to do was go
back in the email 6 years and voila! there it was! So, ML, many
thanks for sending that all those years ago. And yes, if any of you would
like to have your very own to make just send me an email and I will happily
forward it to you.
The service for Sunday is recorded, the link is embedded in
the blog. The blog in case you have not bookmarked it is
kjlaldin.blogspot.com. Yes, it is published already because if I leave
the office without having done that, I may not think about it until next
week! It has been suggested that I set a timer on my phone but that seems
like too much of a bother when I can simply hit the button when it is done.
RC and her crew are still plugging away at the project that
she has undertaken. Yes, get your wallets ready!! Hopefully we will
have advertising and brochures and all the good stuff (like full information
and not teasers) ready for you soon.
I think that is all of the bits I have for you today, in
case you’re wondering, yes, I’m still walking the streets (sticking to my neighbourhood)
getting to know a few people. Every now and then my DH goes for a walk
with Aslan and I (everyone knows Aslan there) and occasionally someone calls
out to me by name and my DH looks at me and says …you know those people?
Duh of course they aren’t picking random names out of the pot and giving it a
try. Aslan and I are fixtures on the streets apparently.
Have a lovely weekend, stay safe and be well
December 3, Advent 2 …And welcome December
December rolled in nicely with milder weather which I am
sure everyone is enjoying immensely. Like most weeks this week has been
no less busy and now to figure out how much information I need to load on to
you! Quite a bit actually!
We have been having email issues! We got kicked out of
one of the programs and despite numerous calls we were unable to track down the
passwords. That meant we could not get mass emails out to you, except by
monkey mail hence the notice from Rachel earlier this week.
Now it seems we are back in but not necessarily have all of
the specific groups transferred in their entirety. The Up to Date was
emailed today, did you get it? If not don’t tell me but email the office and let the administrator know who among us seems to have
gone missing —yes I have gone missing from the list, but that might not be a
bad thing.
Many years ago, my friend, who is a social worker, said
avoid the smart phone or black berry. If you get one you will never have
personal or free time again. I resisted for many years but my flip phone
would no longer work and I had to go to an android. Then I refused to
give out my number and sync the thing to my email because the cell phone was
for my convenience, not everyone else’s! and lo and behold changes occurred
again and for some functions you needed the email attached - - - you see where
this is going, my friend was absolutely right. So, I finally decided to
create a work address for email. I would kindly ask you all to do the
update in your mailboxes (nlgirlnmb@gmail.com) and send work related messages
here. This email will be checked when I am in the office. In the
event of an emergency (such as illness, imminent death or anything of
the like) then please do not hesitate to call me.
You have all received RC’s note and poster about the extra
events. DO NOT PANIC! Regular services are taking
place every Sunday. We just finished the service for this Sunday and DC
is gone to work his usual magic with the production. This week we are
having a virtual Eucharist. Please have wine and bread ready at the
offering time and we will set our tables and join in God’s feast
together. Now just a few little points: we sip the wine, we don’t
gulp! You only need a little in the glass/chalice - not the whole
bottle! Bread of course is of your choice, (bread, rice crackers etc) but
again a little goes a long way! No loaf needed!
Advent 3 I thought I would try something else so it is
quieter and more thoughtful in style.
Advent 4 will be a service of the word
Christmas Eve, depending on how this Sunday goes, is planned
to be a celebration of the Eucharist as we join with Angels, Shepherds and the
Holy family in celebrating the birth day of our Saviour
Christmas Day, tag! TS is on! And he will bring a
special service for Christmas.
Now that was as far as I planned! Then RC
says “what did you want to do with the last Sunday of December?” I
gave her a blank look and then the calendar was opened and what to my wonderous
eyes should appear was December 27 - A Sunday! Not Santa and definitely no
reindeer. Never let it be said I wasn’t up to thinking on my feet.
Do you have a request for a carol? For many years I have had a very
informal service on this “low” Sunday with lots of carol singing since we
have such a short time to fit them all in. So, lets see if we can stump
the pianist and send in your requests, she’ll sing them all! Sounds like
fun you say and you want in on it, well in that case contact our music director
RC to see how you can upload yourself or your family bubble doing a
carol. Can’t sing you say — of course you can, so let’s have some fun
with this! I wonder how many songs RC can sing all in one go!!! So,
get those requests in by December 17.
Now I need a little feed back. Some have asked for no
mask when recording the service. Problem is we are trying to remain in
compliance with recommendations and when we record at the church there are
usually at least three of us here. Are you fine with the mask off only
during the sermon (as we tried for this coming Sunday?) RC and DC who are
recording went to the very back of the church when I did this part. For
the communion piece the mask definitely has to be on, since again there are at
least two more to receive and I am too close to the bread without it. If
you prefer the whole thing (except communion) to be mask free then we will have
to do some adjustments with where we stand when we are recording.
And our travelling trio are out and about. We have
garnered a lot of followers, some days the post gets well over 200 hits as
people travel along on the advent journey with Mary, Joseph and the trusty
donkey. So far there have been very warm welcomes. The pictures
have been going up on St. Paul’s Facebook page so if you and your family are
hosts we encourage you to keep adding to the pictures and the travelling
journal. Feel free to use your own creche (or make your paper one).
Pictures can be sent to the office or T C to be uploaded.
I think that is enough for one week, I am sure there will be
lots more to share next week and it will be fun to see where the trio are off
to next and what they experience.
Stay well and stay safe
December 10, Here’s what’s Happening
Where do I start with the news for this week?
There are so many things on the go here I have post it notes
stuck everywhere with lists of who will be participating in the Advent 4
service and who will participate in Christmas Eve service and let’s not forget
the last Sunday of December! Speaking of which — WHERE are those
REQUESTS???? We need them by the 17th, so please send them to RC. For the
singers of the congregation that want to participate, record at home just get
that email recording to Doug but please let us know that you plan to
participate.
We have had a wonderful response to the special event that RC
and Co. put together. One parishioner was particularly excited and sent a
note along asking how she could turn it into a gift for families that may be
struggling this year, here is what she wrote:
More opportunities for 'Connecting at Christmas'!
“As we mark our Centennial year as a parish, it is with
excitement that we await the release of our two videos celebrating Lessons and
Carols and Christmas Eve. Many of us have likely already purchased links and
are set to go. However, many of our parishioners may simply not have the
financial means, particularly in this year of great challenges, to pay for
access to the videos. Here's where the 'more opportunities' comes in. If you do
have the financial means, you are invited to purchase one or more additional
sets of links to be offered to other parishioners who otherwise would not be
able to view what promises to be some amazing works of story and song. This
would be done anonymously on both ends, with only Karen aware of who the gift
givers and gift recipients are.
How will this work? If you are a parishioner who feels
unable to afford this purchase at this time, but would like to view the videos,
please contact Karen 204 880 9124 or email her. If you would like to offer a
gift, please e-transfer to St. Paul and in the message box indicate 'For an
anonymous gift to a parishioner'. Thank you to both gift givers and recipients
for considering this opportunity”
I can tell you that there have already been people that have
done this and that is before seeing Trish’s message. Rachel and I had
done some planning around this but parishioners are well ahead of us!
This Sunday the service is different that previous
weeks! We aimed to slow down and make it quieter and more
meditative. We hope that we have succeeded! Yes, the blog is published.
The Progress is published and emailed to those on the
computer and mailed to those who are not.
We will have an intern with us from Trinity College in Mid
January. Susan will join us somewhere around the 11th. In 28 years,
this will be my first time having an intern to supervise — there were some
benefits to being in the rural parishes, one seldom (actually never) got asked
to do any of these things. Four parishioners have graciously agreed to
join Susan and I on this path. There role is that of a Lay Support Group for
Susan and to provide feedback, reflection and just generally be a support for
her. Who are they? I can hear you asking. I’m tempted to keep you
in suspense! TS, AJ, AO, and LR were agreeable to being part of this so
we are all learning together.
The travelling Trio — how could I forget
them! They are loose in the city and wandering all over the place.
The stories that have been shared of the experiences of the hosts are fabulous
and the pictures are great. People are having so much fun and I am
thoroughly enjoying reading them. The creativity is awesome. We are
keeping a physical journal here at the church, we know the archives are going
to want a record!! Perhaps Linda will include excerpts in the next
Progress for everyone to share. At the moment their journey is posted on Facebook
if you would like to follow along. I know it’s not ideal but we do our
best to keep people connected in whatever means we have at our disposal.
Last I looked the trio had over 300 people checking in on them.
My DH always asks what I wrote to you this week, grumbles
that I haven’t added him to the mailing list so he can read for himself — I
leave out the bits I don’t want him to know I wrote. You guessed it, he’s
still not added and NO don’t forward it to him!
So let me leave you with this picture of Bruce — he had just
finished building a shelter for the donkey for the evening —a no pet condo and
no garage meant a little improvising! Lucky, I haven’t had to host, I
could just imagine putting the donkey in the garage and in the morning needing
to shovel….(manure yeah that’s the word I was going for!)
Have a Fabulous weekend
Stay well and stay safe
December 17 Advent 4 and
Christmas Eve
Hi Everyone
I’m a little early today. I have a funeral this afternoon.
The gentleman said, “Really you’ll come and do the funeral even though I’m not
your parishioner?” And I replied “YET” So I get the honour of celebrating the
life of their loved one with them for a very short time today.
Now I have a confession and a question — piqued your
interest now didn’t it. Confession first, it’s good for the soul! Last week’s
Service for Advent 3 was recorded in two sittings. To make sure you didn’t
notice Rachel informed me what I was wearing so I would have the same outfit
on, but she missed one little detail. How closely did you watch the service and
did you notice the one wardrobe change? If you did and you are not from the
Cameron household, or the office — I’m tempted to turn this into a competition
— yes lets, first one to send me the correct answer, yes, it is something
visible, will get a little surprise from me, only not a visit since they are
not allowed yet. I can just see you all reviewing this one closely and the
number of hits for viewing increasing!
Advent 4 Service is posted on the blog, the YouTube version
will be available for you on Sunday morning.
Christmas Eve is in progress and the readers have already
sent the material to Doug, I do my bits tomorrow and then Doug works his magic.
I have to say the visuals make the services fabulous and I worry that when we
get back in person that we are not going to be delivering the extra sensory
quality. I hope being back together makes up for some of that.
Christmas Day, Tim is doing Eucharist by zoom. If you are
interested in attending please contact Tim and he will set you up.
The office will be closed for Christmas, messages will be
checked and the office admin will be in on December 30 to check e-mail. If you
absolutely need to come in for any end of year things please make sure you
arrange it with the office. Our admin says the only way she will change being in
the office on the 30th is is she hears we are having the mother of all storms
and needs to come before it hits! 2020 has been bad enough we definitely DO NOT
need that!
December 27 Service had a request deadline — it is today
December 17! If you did not get your request in yet to RC so that your
favourite Carol or Christmas Song is sung you have until end of the day today.
I’m going to take liberties and say until 11:59 pm. So get those requests off
to RC, if you don’t have her contact information just send them to me and I
will forward the request to her, no I’m not waiting up that late, I’ll send
them early in the morning.
I almost forgot the travelling Trio, they have been making
their way around the city. Some pictures and travel journals have been sent and
we have been posting on Facebook. This travelling trio gets nearly 300 hits
every time we post their latest stop. So if you have been a host and haven’t
sent along pictures or details of your visit with the travelers then send them
along to us and we will be happy to share it with others One of my former
parishioners got in on the fun and wrote “They were in Curling
Newfoundland and looking for Rev . Karen. We told them that she had moved to
Winnipeg and that her and her husband were happy there. They told us that they
had to pass through Winnipeg and would look her up. We also gave them a good
old Newfie meal and they were very thankful. Mary will soon be giving birth so
she gets tired easily. We wished them all the best on their journey and we will
watch and listen when the glorious birth is announced.” Joyce and
Don Perrett
I’m just sorry I didn’t think to mail it across Canada and
let the Trio make their way West, I am sure I know a few people in every
province. We have had lots of interest in this fun project for Advent from old
and young alike. Always another year! Yes, the resources have been shared with
some friends who want to try it next year, it seems it looked like we were
enjoying this and they want to get in on the fun of welcoming Mary, Joseph and
the Donkey
Well, I’m off to the funeral chapel and at the most
inopportune times I get a song worm in my head about going to the chapel, but
for an entirely different purpose. Although I had a man tell me one time that
he no longer goes to church after his really bad experience. I was concerned
and asked what happened, he replied well you see I went in single and I came
out married! On that note…
Have a wonderful day, stay well and stay safe
December 24, Christmas Eve
Christmas officially started in Newfoundland yesterday! An
old tradition called Tib’s Eve (or Tipsy Eve as most locals refer to it) kicks
off the season. Yes, it is friends that gather, much drinking takes place and
then we go home to spend the remainder of Christmas with family. Most people
get smashed. As I told someone earlier today, I was always a welcome addition
as I was the DD. Alcohol does not sit well with me and one drink will usually
make me ill for days, I figure its not worth it but the parties are still lots
of fun. It’s been years since I had the opportunity to join into one of them
though. It’s usually too busy a season for late nights and drunken revelry!
DC has worked his magic with the Service and it is already
uploaded for your convenience. Thanks to RC, I have figured out how to add
the link right to the button at the end of this message. But just in case…The
YouTube channel is
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Vw0Zt_Cxtg&t=996s
Words to the service can be found on the blog
kjlaldin.blogspot.com
It is a virtual communion service so please have bread and
wine ready and set your tables as we share the meal together. If you are not
quite ready you can always hit pause — see there is a positive side to this
format. Pause, fast forward, rewind and immediate animated participation if the
preacher says something you disagree with!!!
As well, a reminder that TS is hosting a service by Zoom at
10 am tomorrow. If you would like to join please contact TS and he will send
you the link.
December 27 there will be a “service” of sorts for you. Lots
of singing, there were a goodly number of requests, some additional
participants from the comfort and safety of home and a beautiful Christmas
story. I did the welcome and closing — RC said “you wouldn’t want people to
think you are not working!” Hey, I’m the ideas person and I have no problem delegating
as I think a few of you have experienced. I like to say I voluntell, you know
strongly encourage people to express their many talents, some known and some
being discovered.
I know that for many this will be a difficult Christmas as
we can not gather with family and friends. But as we celebrate the light of
Christmas in our world today and through the next 12 days we look to better
days and offer the hope, peace, joy and love that we have celebrated these past
weeks and know that a new year means new possibilities.
The travelling Trio will be visible in the service but their
journey will wind up today at the home of the Bishop. If you were a host and
did not send in pictures and/or a travel log please feel free to add to the
album. I have been told that this captured the imagination of all ages, so
likely something that might be worth repeating another year so that others may
have the opportunity to share the experience.
A Reminder that the office is closed. It will be open on
December 30 from 8-12 and ten re-open on January 4 resuming regular hours of
8-12 Monday to Friday.
If you need to contact me for an emergency of any kind feel
free to email, text or call me on my cell phone
Enjoy the Christmas Eve service today and HOPEFULLY with the
vaccine we will be back in person sooner rather than later.
Aslan sends his greetings as well, hopefully the picture below will give you a smile as he hangs his head (he is actually trying to get the tassel but you can put your own interpretation on it!)
Have a blessed season
December 31, New Year and Anniversaries
Well, we made it! We have marked one year together. This
marriage has had an odd beginning, after all we were only together 10 weeks
when we were forced to isolate from each other and have a separation of sorts.
I suspect this relationship has a firm foundation given all the struggles we
have been through together and the challenges we have had to face in 2020. I
can’t imagine we could be tried more…and I honestly hesitate to say that. But
yes, naively, I really thought we’d be back together before this! As Neil
Sedaka sings, Breaking up is hard to do….
This week will mark the beginning of the new year and the
end of the Christmas season as the wise guys finally make it with those most
odd gifts. I do hope that despite having to celebrate in relative isolation you
have managed to have a lovely Christmas and will ring in the New Year tonight.
I read that there is an Irish tradition where on New Years Eve you open the
door to let the old year out. I hope my windows are not frozen shut cause it
won’t only be doors that are opened as I bid a hasty farewell to 2020. More
like a case of here’s your hat, what’s your hurry!!
On a more serious note, the service for Sunday will be up
for Sunday morning. It has been recorded, Music was underway yesterday (really
beautiful to work to the singing and music), everyone asked to participate have
sent in their pieces and then DC works his magic for us all to enjoy. Once I
have the words to the song selections, I will drop them in the blog and it will
be there for you to follow along. The address for the blog
kjlaldin.blogspot.com
Last Sunday, received an incredible number of views for what
is considered a “low Sunday” in the church year. Apparently, lots of you loved
the story as well. I was happy to hear that you enjoyed it so much.
A few of you asked that I give a tally of the number of
gifts we offered for the Christmas Event that RC and her team undertook. I am
not sure of the final numbers for the total links sold. However, what I do know
was there were six parishioners who asked that gifts be anonymously given to
parishioners and in total we gifted eleven.
We will be back with our regular schedule of Services for
January. And please note that we will welcome our intern, SS, with us in just a
couple of weeks. Her first Sunday will be January 17.
January 10 is the baptism of Jesus and we will celebrate
together with Eucharist again and use the opportunity to renew our Baptismal
Covenant for this new year. I will close my eyes and imagine I have a great big
branch and give you all a good soaking!
The travelling Trio made it safely through the Advent
Season, arrived back at the church and will be ready for more adventures next
year. Some of those who had the opportunity to participate directly said how
much they enjoyed it and that it captured the imagination. If you did not have
a chance to follow them on Facebook with the write-ups that we received from
some of the hosts (we have saved them all for the archives) would it be
worthwhile creating a file that we can email out for you to read? If you would
like that then please let me (the office) know I am sure that our administrator
will be happy to drop it to you.
Short but sweet today and as always stay safe, stay well
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
