Sentence of the day:
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest
Having arrived at Holy week with the lauded day of Palm Sunday, celebrating the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem not in majesty like a powerful king with pomp and pageantry but humbly riding on a work animal, a donkey. People lay what they have nearby on the road before Jesus; coats, branches whatever is at hand. They turn it into a celebration of hope and of faith although he seems to not be the kind of king, messiah that they looked for and that they had been taught to look for and yet they were not without hope that Jesus would usher in a new reign. Today we gather to celebrate, not together as with this crowd, not together as we are accustomed to but together in spirit and in word. If you have a tree in your yard, collect a branch and allow that to be your frond to lay on the road to mark the path that Jesus will tread or tie a ribbon around it that can wave and dance with the wind. Allow the branch (if you have cut one) to hang in your window or on your door as a symbol of the hopefulness that we hold together that Jesus, our Messiah, approaches. (written by K. Laldin)
As you sing the hymn below or another hymn of your choosing that is familiar to you, let your celebration and procession begin as you travel through your home from one room to another.
Hymn Ride on King Jesus
Chorus: Ride on King Jesus
No one can a-hinder thee
Ride on King Jesus ride on
No one can a-hinder thee
King Jesus rides to Jerusalem
No one can a-hinder thee
Hosanna to King David’s son
No one can a-hinder thee
He rides upon a donkey small
No one can a-hinder thee
The King of peace the Lord of all
No one can a-hinder thee
The children sing and they dance and shout
No one can a-hinder thee
If they won’t praise the rocks cry out
No one can a-hinder thee
King Jesus done just what He said
No one can a-hinder thee
He healed the sick and He raised the dead
No one can a-hinder thee
The light of God shines on His face
No one can a-hinder thee
He offers all His pardoning grace
No one can a-hinder thee
Come join the throng your voices raise
No one can a-hinder thee
The King of love deserves your praise
No one can a-hinder thee

Gathering together (Karen Laldin: based on psalm 31)
Lord we seek refuge in you, we call upon you name
We know that you hear our cries and that you offer us assurance of your presence with us
We find ourselves in distress, filled with grief and fear
We worry about the terror that is around us, the uncertainty and the unknown
And yet You, our God, remind us to trust
You, God remind us that you will be ever present to us
Loving God, let us be open to feeling your loving presence pour upon us
We will be steadfast in the knowledge that we are loved!
God of the present moment, God who in Jesus stills the storm and soothes the frantic heart; bring hope and courage to all who wait in uncertainty. Bring hope that you will make them the equal of whatever lies ahead. Bring them courage to endure what cannot ne avoided, for your will is health and wholeness; You are God, and we need you. Amen (from the New Zealand Prayer book) Submitted by David Robinson
The Invitatory (Psalm 100) (from the Book of Alternative Services, Anglican church of Canada)
The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: O come, let us worship
Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; * serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song.
Know this: The Lord himself is God; * he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; * give thanks to him and call upon his name.
For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; * and his faithfulness endures from age to age
The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: O come, let us worship
The Proclamation of the Word
Biblical Readings were copied from the online Oremus Bible, NRSV
Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29
1 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his steadfast love endures for ever!
2 Let Israel say, ‘His steadfast love endures for ever.’
19 Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it.
21 I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation.
22 The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.
23 This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Save us, we beseech you, O Lord! O Lord, we beseech you, give us success!
26 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord.
27 The Lord is God, and he has given us light. Bind the festal procession with branches, up to the horns of the altar.
28 You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God, I will extol you.
29 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures for ever.
A Reading from the prophet Isaiah (50:4-9a)
The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens— wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backwards. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty?

Responsary The Cross
Surely he has borne our griefs; * he has carried our sorrows.
Surely he has borne our griefs; * he has carried our sorrows.
He was despised; he was rejected, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
He has carried our sorrows.
He was pierced for our sins, bruised for no fault but ours.
He has carried our sorrows.
His punishment has won our peace, and by his wounds we are healed.
He has carried our sorrows.
We had all strayed like sheep, but the Lord has laid on him the guilt of us all.
He has carried our sorrows.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Surely he has borne our griefs; * he has carried our sorrows.
A Reading from the letter of Paul to the Philippians (2:5-11)
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Hymn Into Jerusalem Jesus Rode 183 BCP
Into Jerusalem Jesus rode,
triumphant king acclaimed;palm branches spread to honour his way,
garments laid down as tokens of praise;
shouts of “Hosanna” surged through the throng,
into Jerusalem.
Within Jerusalem Jesus stood,
masquerade king reviled;
thorns made a crown (grim satire of truth),
robe like a wound thrown over his back;
echoes of “Crucify” filled the air,
within Jerusalem.
Outside Jerusalem Jesus hung,
crucified King despised;
wood formed a cross suspending his life;
soldiers cast lots to deal out his clothes;
his lonely cries: “My God”; “It is done,”
outside Jerusalem.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew (21:1-11)
When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, 'The Lord needs them.' And he will send them immediately." This took place to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, "Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey." The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, "Who is this?" The crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee."

Questions to ponder or discuss
What would you lay before Jesus?
How would you answer the question asked in the gospel, “Who is this?”?
An Affirmation of Faith (from the Iona Community)
We believe that God is present
in the darkness before dawn;
in the waiting and uncertainty
where fear and courage join hands,
conflict and caring link arms,
and the sun rises over barbed wire.
We believe in a with-us God
who sits down in our midst
to share our humanity.
We affirm a faith
that takes us beyond the safe place:
into action, into vulnerability
and into the streets.
We commit ourselves to work for change
and put ourselves on the line;
to bear responsibility, take risks,
live powerfully and face humiliation;
to stand with those on the edge;
to choose life
and be used by the Spirit
for God's new community of hope.
Amen.

A spendthrift lover is the Lord who never counts the cost
or asks if heaven can afford to woo a world that’s lost.
Our lover tosses coins of gold across the midnight skies
And stokes the sun against the cold to warm us when we rise.
Still more is spent in blood and tears to win the human heart,
To overcome the violent fears that drive the world apart.
Behold the bruised and thorn-crowned face of one who bears our scars
And empties out the wealth of grace that’s hinted by the stars.
How shall we love this heart – strong God who gives us everything,
Whose ways to us are strange and odd; what can we give or bring?
Acceptance of the matchless gift is gift enough to give.
The very act will shake and shift the way we love and live
or asks if heaven can afford to woo a world that’s lost.

Prayer over the Gifts
Gracious God, the suffering and death of Jesus, your only Son, makes us pleasing in your sight. Alone we can do nothing, but through his sacrifice, may we receive your love and mercy. Amen
Collect
Almighty and everliving God, in tender love for all our human race you sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take our flesh and suffer death upon a cruel cross. May we follow the example of his great humility, and share in the glory of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen
Gathering our prayers and praises into one, let us pray as our Saviour taught us,
Hymn All Glory Laud and Honour
All glory, laud, and honor
to you, Redeemer, King,
to whom the lips of children
made sweet hosannas ring.
You are the King of Israel
and David's royal Son,
now in the Lord's name coming,
the King and Blessed One.
The company of angels
is praising you on high;
and we with all creation
in chorus make reply.
The people of the Hebrews
with palms before you went;
our praise and prayer and anthems
before you we present.
To you before your passion
they sang their hymns of praise;
to you, now high exalted,
our melody we raise.
As you received their praises,
accept the prayers we bring,
for you delight in goodness,
O good and gracious King!
