The three day bus pass is a superb buy! We have spent the day island hopping and it is a fun way to spend the day. Murano, Burano, the Cemetaire plus views of many more as we cruised by in the water bus. Given the number of islands that are here we have to limit our choices to just a couple. If memory serves correct the guide from last night said there are about thirteen hundred islands. She did not say of they were all inhabited and nor did she say what land mass constitutes an island. We did see a few today that had only one house, others with ruins. It was a gorgeous day on the water. Sunshine and fresh air with what is a great temperature , for us, of sixteen degrees. We have had a slow paced day with exploring and of course gelato.
Murano, known for its fabulous production of glass never disappoints. We wandered around and came upon a store with its own glass artisans (not the one the tours take you to) We were permitted to go inside the workshop and watch them. It is a fascinating process and the skill of the team of three a marvel to watch. They were working on a contemporary art piece that should be complete tomorrow. The cool down is a twenty four hour process we were told. Slowly done to prevent shattering. The owner then gave us a private tour of their gallery. The one of a kind pieces were absolutely breathtaking.
The Cemetaire is exactly that an island cemetery. We walked around enjoying the peace and quiet that was offered there. Went into a chapel reserved for clerics, there were still a few spots left and no I had no desire to book one!
Once we had finished here we were off to Burano. A most colorful place that is a delight to the eye with all of the beautiful colors. It reminds me of the row houses of St. John's, NL. So it is a bit nostalgic. We had fun roaming around, admiring the beautiful lace work that the island is known for and basically sight seeing.
As we waited for the bus to come we enjoyed the local gelato, lemon is still my favourite, and enjoyed the sunshine and warm weather. As we head back on the bus I am availing of the time to write the blog so I’m not up as late tonight getting it ready to post and of course making good use of my time as I sit in the bus enjoying the cool salt breeze. It’s a rough ride, not because the water is choppy but the driver likes to give it a good bang at every stop. Perhaps a few parking lessons wouldn’t go amiss! So sit back with a beverage and enjoy the island hopping around Venice.

Truly beautiful but looks so different in the Spring. We spent time on Lido Island and visited the beach. It's beautiful and in the summer the water is very warm. There are cars on this island as well. I loved the water buses and each time we go we buy the pass. It reminds me of home, just better weather. I love seeing the cargo for stores pass by on the boats and I think of a time when the Burgeo freight arrived on boats at the government wharf. Hopefully I will get to return one day as I truly love this place. Enjoy and I will look forward to your upcoming posts! And, Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary! I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate!
ReplyDeleteThank you Wanda. The birthday as you likely know will be my 50th and the anniversary is 25 years of ordination. Edmund bought me a beautiful glass sculpture on Murano to mark the occasion. Like you I love this place and it is so much more vibrant in the spring. The crowds are picking up
